The purpose of Friends of Families of Southwest Louisiana (Friends) is to enable homeless families with children to secure education and job training in order to become employable, to get stable jobs, to become self-sufficient, and to improve their quality of life. This is accomplished by recruiting, training, and supporting volunteer mentors who help these families move from poverty to independent living.
Minimal fee for counseling, if needed. No fee for other services.
Individuals, churches, private foundations, government.
A trained volunteer mentor team is assigned to each client family for a multi-year transitional period. Successful mentoring connects families with the following:
* Ongoing support for the entire family as well
as for individual family members.
* Resources that will provide food, housing,
clothing, medical referrals, home furnish-
ings,and household goods, as needed.
* Development of an initial service plan for the
family including identification of goals.
* Education and job training to increase
probability of employment and job retention.
* Job counseling and assistance in securing
suitable employment with a reasonably
* Counseling for family members to include
substance abuse and family violence
assistance, if necessary.
* Life skills training and support in such areas
as goal setting, money management, parenting
skills, health, nutrition, and social skills.
